Owner Surrenders:

EnchantMutts, Inc. is not a shelter. We do not have facilities that house our dogs and each dog in our care is fostered in a home with other animals. We can only intake dogs when we have an available foster. We give preference to animals in rural shelters that have very little time available to be adopted and are scheduled to be euthanized.

We very seldom intake owner surrenders and do not intake dogs that are aggressive (towards animals or humans) or do not get along with other dogs. We expect people to be responsible for their animals and owning one should be a privilege. The number of animals euthanized annually is overwhelming - both in New Mexico and worldwide. Spay and neuter and take responsibility.

If you must surrender your dog - please consider the following options:

  • Please - if you are having behaviorial issues - always consider contacting a trainer or behavior specialist who might find a solution that allows your dog to remain in your family.
  • If there is a shelter in your local area, do some research, several larger shelters do not place a time limit on adoptable dogs but space available is always an issue. So if you have to abandon your dog - choose wisely. Note that often in smaller shelters – owner surrenders are euthanized first – especially if there is limited space and a stray hold time is adhered to.
  • If you have a purebred dog – please contact rescues that are breed specific to your dog’s breed.
  • Google rescues in your area that possibly intake owner surrenders.
  • If your dog has medical issues that you can not afford and is the reason you are surrendering your animal - there are many potential funding sources available. Go on line and google - animal medical support, foundations that help keep dogs in homes, etc. Contact your local shelters - they may have information on local foundations that work to keep animals in their homes or offer medical programs to support their communities.

We can help courtesy post a dog on Petfinder.com. The dog MUST be spayed or neutered before we can post it and can not be aggressive towards other animals or people. When a dog is courtesy posted on our Petfinder page or our website it is posted as such, a courtesy. The dog is not part of the EnchantMutts system; we do not process applications on these dogs nor do we do any other type of evaluations, we are not responsible. It is up to the owner to screen potential adopters and adopt the dog out and their contact information will be what is posted.

Dogs who are courtesy posted get the same exposure on Petfinder that our own dogs do.  This is not a quick fix but it is a safe way to advertise a pet needing a home.

If you are in need of re-homing your dog (and the animal fits our regulations above) and you think a courtesy post is what you would like to do please send us an email with the following information:

Dog’s name, age, temperament, when they were spayed or neutered and any other medical history (vaccinations, etc).

We will also need a short biography about the dog, its personality, its ability to get along with other dogs, people and other pets, and any special needs it may have and the reason you are looking to rehome your dog.

Photos of the dog. Please send 2-3 pictures, preferably taken outside in a nice setting. Photos should show the dog’s face and body, and should portray its overall personality. Please refrain from sending in photos that include people or unpleasant surroundings. These pictures will be what the public sees on Petfinder.

Please understand that we approve these courtesy listings on an individual basis and may need to communicate with you further before approving:

Please include the city the dog is located in and your personal contact information you want posted publicly in the Petfinder post.
